You will want to purchase a Director/Lingo book such as "Macromedia Director MX 2004 Bible" or "Macromedia Director MX and Lingo: Training from the Source".  Other texts will be available online and in print form.


Course Description:

This edition of Emerging Technologies will explore among other things, user involved networked art. The class will begin with small individual projects then progress to larger colaborative projects in a lab or work like setting. All students will be expected to colaborate and share equally in the projects undertaken by their group. To this end part of your grade will be evaluated by other students in your group.

Students will be expected to synthesize many of the content-development skills acquired in previous course work and develop conceptual skills that will enable them to work independently of teacher direction on their own projects. Customarily I do not assign projects or tell you what to make. You should be prepared to think for yourselves. Data Retention:
Back up numbered versions of your work! Lost data is not an excuse for missing work. Projects, when applicable should be emailed to my gmail account. This class will have web hosting so that your projects will be freeze dried for posterity and export.

Student Evaluation/Methods of Assessment:

Grading is based on:

1) Attendance + participation - 10%

2) Evaluations by the members of your group - 10%

3) Projects:

    #1 - 20%
    #2 - 40%

4)Documentation website - 20%
The class will purchase a Domain Name and projects will be posted online for a minimum of 1 year.

Some of the material we will cover may push some boundaries. Art is supposed to do that. If you feel that your boundaries have been breached, try to stick it out and see where things are going. If you need to leave the room, please write a one page paper explaining your reaction to the material.

Week 2 Sept  5  You are already a cyborg
Reading (due this class): " Look Who's Talking" Wired Issue 7.01 | Jan 1999. Be prepared to talk about the reading!

Review the Director interface, apply behaviors, manipulate the timeline.Of course all of this may change depending upon your previous experience.

Week 3 Sept 12   HyperText & Completion vs. Clicking,  Project 1 due
Examine Eric Loyer's "Lair of the Marrow Monkey" & "Chroma" as well as other noted interactive works. Create a small in class project to determine student skill sets.

Depending upon my assessment of the student skill sets, the class will either continue with timeline based work or shift to basic programming.

Week 4 Sept 19  Conventions
Directions are good. Helping the user out is good isn't it? Who are your users? Who is beta testing your work?
Everyone is required to bring in a list of no less than 7 usability conventions to class. Its part of the participation grade.
Reading (week 5): Social Networks, Class, Visualization and Change - Josh On

Intro to text manipulation; changing members, changing font, size, color, concatonation and chunk expressions  properties, method consturction and various assorted goodies.

Week 5, Sept 26  Social Networks,  Project 2 due  
Review procedures and discuss group dynamics.
Reading due this week: Social Networks, Class - Josh On

Assess comprehension and retention of lingo skills. In depth look at the nuts and bolts of how we write code. Intro to control structures, if, then, else. Lets move the sprite across the stage and check location.

Week 6, Oct 3:  Group Project proposals due    
Begin forming working groups and developing ideas for project 3.
Review principals, elements, techniques.
Who is your audience? What do you have to say? How will you reach them?

Review control structures, examine lists and advanced code structures.

Week 7, Oct 10: Visualization of data
Present project proposals and recieve feedback. Make changes to the project proposals as necessary. Look at a number of examples of data vizualizations and art work that uses data viz at its core.           

Demo networked Lingo and other code bits as necessary.

Week 8, Oct 17: Semiotics & media
Semiotics & media lecture. Semiotics is the study of how signs operate in culture. We can use a better understanding of how spoken and visual language operate to communicate more effectively with our audience.

XML processing and data parsing.
 
Week 9, Oct 24: Project 3 due         
Present projects with Class Critique.

There will be code work as well as meetings with groups to determine how best to proceed with your group projects.

Week 10, Oct 31: Project proposals due       
Begin Planning for Final project.
Be prepared to present the project proposals to the class.

We'll decide what lingo to cover today based on what directions you wish to take in your final projects.

Week 11, Nov 7: Continiuosly changing forms and networked information
Begin work on Final. View work that involves networked elements that allow the work to remain in a state of flux.

Class demo's will be based upon questions taken from the previous week. These will be questions about elements you wish to include in final projects.

Week 12, Nov 14: A Joyful Noise
Sun Ra said it best in his documentary, "A Joyful Noise." This weeks lecture will have been worked out in advance but is left open. We'll decide what ideas to cover based on what directions you wish to take in your final projects as discussed in week 10. What sort of artwork should I bring in? What technologies are you interested in?

Week 13, Nov 21: It gets fuzzy this far out
But your ideas and timeline shouldn't be fuzzy. You should know exactly what has to be accomplished and what task has been delgated to whom. Present projects to the class for any last suggestions before final presentation. Discuss problems faced by students in executing projects, especially with regard to individuals not fully carring their weight.

Revew complex programming structures.

Week 14, Dec 5: Have you really read this far down?
You heard me! Class work time. Your projects should largely be finished at this point. This is not a day for goofing off, but work. There are always problems that present themselves to you at the last minute.  I'll be available to help solve problems, so take advantage of my art making experience.

Week 15, Final week: Project 4 due
Present Final projects and web site documentation. Endure class critique. Resolve any outstanding issues. .
